‘Dream’ is everyone’s favourite new ballad

Ah, don’t we love cross-agency collaborations? Ship all the biases! Current chart-topping jazzy ballad ‘Dream’, sung by EXO‘s Baekhyun and miss A‘s Suzy, is SM and JYP‘s first official collaboration – and we’re absolutely hooked.

We’ve got to thank Park Geun Tae of Mystic Entertainment for this – the talented producer suggested pairing the unlikely two up for a duet after observing their vocal colour for awhile and deciding they were a perfect match. I’m sure that initial announcement raised a few eyebrows, but we’re sure the rave response to the track’s release is nothing but pure good news.

‘Dream’ is a pretty mix of pop and R&B, a jazzy track that works well to the advantage of both Baekhyun and Suzy’s voices, and is a joy to listen to. The song’s naturally warm and charming tone sets up an excellent premise for both singers to really feel the music and emote beautifully. While retaining his voice’s raspy tinge, Baekhyun manages to keep the mood light and breezy while perfectly complementing Suzy’s airy delivery. The song isn’t one that’s hard to sing, but it takes certain vocal styling to elevate it above generic cafe music, and we’re really glad that Baekhyun and Suzy have far surpassed our expectations, especially the latter. I’m going to be frank – I love Suzy as much as the next person, but I wasn’t expecting much from this duet because she’s definitely not known for her singing. I’m really glad that Park Geun Tae’s foresight reminded me that you can bring out the best in a singer, depending on song type and delivery. Fingers crossed for other singers to get a good opportunity to shine!

What other cross-agency collaborations would you like to see?
