Falling for the JoonMi couple on We Got Married
I’ve never hopped onto the We Got Married bandwagon because it’s a concept that simply never appealed to me. The couples on the show also fail to interest me and it wasn’t until Kwanghee and Sunhwa got onboard that I actually sat through a whole episode of the programme and found that I quite enjoyed it. I loved the couple’s easy banter right off the bat – though admittedly, they appeared so much more like BFFs than anything.
But as with all reality shows, I can’t help but watch with a critical eye and an inner voice that’s constantly telling me, “This is fake. It’s all scripted.” Eventually, I dropped the show and before I knew it, the lip balm couple were saying their goodbyes and moving on from the show. Since then, there hasn’t been any couple that’s inspired me enough to want to pick up the show again… until now.
Actress Jung Yumi (Rooftop Prince, A Thousand Days’ Promise), and Superstar K4‘s Jung Joon Young (a.k.a Andrew Simon Joon Mercutio Cheng) recently joined We Got Married as one of the two newest couples and honestly, their relationship is like something out of a drama and I. Cannot. Get. Enough. They’re ticking off all the right checkboxes for me and there’s never a dull moment with them. Let’s see…
- Complete opposites – check.
- Noona–dongsaeng couple – check.
- Bad boy rocker who is an inner hardcore geek – check.
- Sweet, older actress who thinks she can change him – check.
- Adorable chemistry – check, check, check.
When it comes to a show like this, it’s vital that you have characters who are actually… well, interesting – and you really don’t have to look any further than Jung Joon Young. After getting so used to all these pretty-faced nice guys, it’s so refreshing to come across a character like his. He gives off a vibe that’s very cool yet relatable, and I feel like he’s the sort of guy many are afraid of being, if that makes any sense. He’s not ashamed of who he is, and in fact, he’s someone who would proudly show off his gaming room. Even when he was describing his ideal date to Yumi, he talked about how he’d dreamed of the two of them sitting side by side and gaming till dawn. Really knows how to make a woman melt, this guy.
He’s endearingly boyish too with his deep dislike for anything sporty (“I thought marathon was an ice cream at first”) and I like how he’d readily admitted to having his cabinet filled to the brim with beer. He’s definitely blunt to a fault, and can even come across as an ass sometimes – such as all the times where he brings up Yumi’s age or when he insistently calls her “noona” even when it’s obvious she doesn’t like it. But this also means he’s very quick-witted and his quips are often so priceless.
One of my favourite moments during their first encounter was when Yumi was trying to get him hyped up about sports after he’d admitted that he quite enjoyed skateboarding. She’d asked excitedly, “Do you like surfing?” and he’d immediately responded with, “…like the Internet?” Come on, this guy is practically all of us. Sometimes he’ll say things that make me go, “Is this guy for real?” but he’s just so hilariously fascinating to me that I don’t even mind. TV needs more characters like these, to be honest.
I just love how Yumi’s taking this all in her stride even though I’m sure Joon Young’s not exactly what she’d imagined her faux husband would be like. She’s really sweet but looks like she can have a feisty side too, which I hope to see more of in the future. I like the couple’s easy chemistry so far and yes, I totally buy in to the whole opposites attract deal, okay?
But more importantly, these two make you wanna watch them onscreen. They’re not boring together and there are little to no awkward silences between them because you have one who’s really witty and another who’s really good at making small talk. In fact, I found myself laughing a lot watching these two interact even though they’ve only just met.
Just to give you a sense of the kind of characters we’re dealing with here and to share one of many golden moments from their first two episodes alone, here’s what Joon Young had said when the couple decided to search each other up on their phones (keep in mind, they’d only just met!): “I’m sorry, there is a link called “see-through Jung Yumi” and I tried clicking on it. Do you wear sheer clothing often? …This will be a happy marriage.”
And now let’s compare them to Naeun and Taemin. Okay, the pair are awkwardly cute in their own way, but they don’t really have personalities that are particularly outstanding, so it’s only when you have more extroverted members like Eunji and Key around them that the situations become much more funny and engaging to watch as a viewer.
We’re only two episodes in for our JoonMi couple so far, and the possibilities are endless. I’m rooting for these two and even though the chemistry isn’t sizzling by any means and romance is the farthest thing from my mind right now, I’m still really excited to see how this little drama will play out. Will the girl tame her bad boy and make him want to change his ways? Or will she take him up on that gaming date? Stay tuned…
