Ferlyn G: The first step toward a new beginning
A lot has happened for Ferlyn in just a span of a few years. Leaving everything she was familiar with in Singapore, she headed to Korea to learn the ropes of becoming a K-pop star after getting picked from 3,000 hopefuls in 2010.
Up till a while ago, she was still performing the saccharine ‘Luv Virus’ with former group mates as part of SKarf on Korean music shows. Fast forward to 2015, Ferlyn G has taken on a very different direction in her music with the release of her debut album, ‘First‘ on January 2. We dropped by Bugis+ to see the rising star.
The single launch kicked off with performances from the trainees of iGlobalStar (Ferlyn’s company), Tan Yan Hua, who was a contestant on season three of Singapore reality talent show Project Superstar, and students and teachers from Lee Wei Song School of Music.
Sporting purple and green hair, and decked in a leather jacket and ripped jeans, the edgy Ferlyn never looked more comfortable. And rightfully so too, since she was involved in the production process right from the start. Despite her apparent fatigue, she still showed the energy and passion expected of an artiste who takes pride in her work.
The first song she performed featured Tiny-G‘s Mint, whom she met while filming for a Korean programme (the two even went out secretly to have ice cream together!). ‘Luv Talk’, or ‘心放开 (xin fang kai)’, had a really catchy tune and great choreography which suited Ferlyn’s style to a T. Obviously thankful to her friend for coming down all the way to perform alongside her for the showcase, Ferlyn gave Mint a big hug when the song ended. Aww!
She then performed a Mandarin ballad ‘不见不散 (bu jian bu san)‘, and while she’s evidently still not the most comfortable with this genre, it was clear to see that she has worked hard on further improving her vocals since her SKarf days, sounding better and more confident than ever.
It’s never an easy choice to leave a group and go solo – sometimes you get lonely, and other times it gets a little too overwhelming. So we’ve really got to give it to Ferlyn for her perseverance to work towards her passion and dream. It’s also great to see local talent getting more opportunities and we at Dinoseoul wish Ferlyn all the best in her endeavors!
