Hottie Alert: Park Seo Joon
Who says nice guys finish last? When it comes to upstanding male drama leads, you don’t have to look any further than Witch’s Romance‘s Yoon Dong Ha.
Hardworking and warm but with just the right amount of mischief so he’s not your stock drama second male lead (you know the kind, the good-natured guy who always pines from afar but never gets the girl…), Dong Ha is a brilliant example of how nice guys don’t necessarily mean boring. And with the wealth of arrogant chaebols in drama land who are relationship-stupid and somehow believe that antagonising a girl is the way to her heart, once in a while, it’s good to have just a regular guy who’s looking to make a living in this big, bad world… and hey, if he falls in love along the way, well, then that can’t be helped.
Even though Park Seo Joon has only held supporting roles previously, he is truly knocking it out of the park with his first starring role. What I love most about him is that he is never not “on”. Sure, there are probably actors out there who can act circles around him – in fact, he can come across as a little green, but it’s his expressions and constant responses to the people in his surroundings that make him such a treat to watch. Even if he’s not a key part of a scene, I often find myself going back to re-watch certain parts just to giggle over his reactions. Okay, his twinkly-eyed smile may have a little something to do with it too…
The 26-year-old first caught my eye a couple of years ago when he burned up the screen as the MV lead in Bang Yong Guk‘s ‘I Remember‘. His intensity was mesmerising even then, though it’s a pity that his first foray into television was in the massively disappointing Dream High 2. And while I haven’t seen him in anything else after that, I’m glad that he’s gaining some well-deserved attention in 2014 with his lead role in Witch’s Romance. It’s not an easy feat to convincingly sell a real life 19-year age gap but it’s something that Park Seo Joon does with ease as he and 45-year-old Uhm Jung Hwa constantly smoulder it up in the drama week after week.
Don’t believe me? Check out these clips from Episodes 1 and 2 of Witch’s Romance. Ooh la la.
