MV Reviews

TWICE has us giving them more than a second glance

TWICE is JYP Entertainment‘s newest girl group, and also proof that JYP himself is doing something really right this year. I loved DAY6‘s debut, and I adore TWICE. I really do.

I’d say I’m a good judge of whether the group is set to make waves, because besides having zilch exposure or clue that JYP had plans to debut a girl group since last year, I also had no inkling that the final nine members were selected via competition survival show SIXTEEN. Everything was literally brand new information to me when I looked up the group after completely falling for their debut MV and energetic track ‘Like OOH-AHH’.

Why is TWICE as appealing as they are? Maybe it’s the fact they possess the elixir of youth (the youngest member is only 16), maybe it’s the fact that they’re made up of members around Asia (the group has three Japanese members and one Taiwanese member), maybe it’s their cheerleader vibes, or maybe it’s just the cold hard fact that they are the perfect mix of singing/dancing/visual talent.

The teasers for ‘Like OOH-AHH’ had everyone wondering if we were in for a zombie fest ala T-ARA‘s ‘Lovey Dovey’, but the actual MV is strangely nothing like we expected. Although set in a dilapidated school, the mood is far from creepy as we see the members enthusiastically busting dance moves while dressed in their brightest outfits. The whole zombie setup is pretty apt for the Halloween month, and although it’s not anything new in K-pop, I do like the purpose of having the undead serve as background props for TWICE to show a stark personality contrast. That’s probably how I would feel in a room with the members too – totally old and void of any energy as they boast talent and vitality with every springy step. Also, it’s been awhile since we’ve been introduced to a nine-member girl group, so it’s great that TWICE takes its time to introduce each girl through the art of the popular one-take shot at the start of the MV. They also all have different outfits, so thank God for that.

Song-wise, ‘Like OOH-AHH’ is carefully crafted to hook you in from the get-go. From the cheery ‘I just want to fall in love!’ anthem before each chorus to cleverly weaving in the group’s name into the rap bits (‘Pass by once and look back – TWICE’) and the little cheerleader dance break toward the end, the track has nary a dull moment.

I’m still trying to get myself accustomed to the names and faces of each member, but I have picked out a few so far. Vocally, I definitely see Jihyo (red-head) and Nayeon‘s (adorable girl with the bunny teeth) potential and how they basically held the bulk of the song together. Chaeyoung and Dahyun‘s individual rapping bits were mediocre – definitely nothing special or memorable – not really the biggest disappointment because TWICE doesn’t exactly strike me as a group with any sort of rapping prowess. I could be wrong, but we’ll see!

TWICE has definitely proven to have quite the solid debut. ‘Like OOH-AHH’ is far from being a spectacular, polished song, but it does exactly what it sets out to do. Charm viewers while giving them an insight into the group’s dynamic personalities, and also serves as the perfect platform for them to really go further from here. I definitely feel like they’re one of the better debuts this year, and while they might still be trying to establish themselves and solidify their place in the industry, it’s safe to say they have found a pretty good footing for now.
