What the funk: K-Pop goes 1970s groovy

Funk’s not dead. In fact, it’s unabashedly waltzing its way back into mainstream K-pop and reinventing it, while keeping the best parts alive. After hearing a great deal of fantastic music over several weeks, we suss out the latest offerings this summer:

SHINee – Married To The Music

As one of K-pop’s strongest groups with an established identity, SHINee has nary a bad comeback – and ‘Married To The Music’ is one of the best comebacks of the year. It’s fresh, exciting, and completely made for the stage with its theatrical dance moves, the track’s horns, synths and funky bass line, Minho‘s call-and-response bridge, and the boys’ ability to naturally make everything work. Whether it’s in dynamism, vocals or dance, SHINee truly is a group where I fail to see how any member doesn’t efficiently contribute.

B1A4 – Sweet Girl

Ahh B1A4, the adorable boys who will always have a special place in our hearts. ‘Sweet Girl’ is classic B1A4 adorable, but with a more mature vocal style. The track was recorded next to a live band and orchestra, and this notably ups the quality of production, with a sleeker overall sound. The arrangement has hints of a disco funk-inspired arrangement, and gels fantastically with the boys’ vocals.

Kim Tae Woo – Lonely Funk

This is such the ultimate summer jam. Although not quite as similar, ‘Lonely Funk’ gives me the same feel-good vibes as one of my personal favourites from Kim Tae Woo – ‘Be Alright’. The instrumental, with its funky (no pun intended) trumpets and overall upbeat notion, coupled with the MV’s saturated visuals, is the perfect track to crank up and get people moving. Can this former G.O.D singer do any wrong?

KIXS – Beautiful

While we’re hopelessly waiting for DMTN to make a comeback, leader Jeesu, also known as KIXS for solo activities, released this super funky track at the beginning of this year. With slick electric guitar and bass coupled with the brass section, KIXS effortlessly makes this upbeat and cheerful track work because of his naturally high voice. Featured rapper San E then completes it with his signature quirky rapping. Overall it’s an enjoyable track worth replaying.

AMAMOO‘s latest album is called ‘Pink Funky’, and it’d be weird if there weren’t any funky tracks on it, right? ‘AHH OOP!‘, written by and featuring singer eSNa, was also released as a single previously. This song is about how guys should respect girls to win their hearts. Besides the usual guitars and brass, there are also saxophone ad-libs during the rap parts which spice up the track even more. Of course, MAMAMOO’s vocals and harmonies are amazing. It isn’t as catchy as their hit ‘Um Oh Ah Yeh’, but it’s still a good song with a great message.
